History

The legend continues

Mercier is a century-old French bicycle brand that accompanied the democratization of cycling and made its mark on the history of the sport in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Founded in 1919, the company began by selling frames and then moved on to complete bicycles.

In 1933, it formed a professional team and wrote some of the most glorious pages in cycling history: four victories in Milan-San Remo, five in Paris-Roubaix, and more than 40 stage victories in the Tour de France.

Legendary riders made their careers at Mercier: Antonin Magne, Louison Bobet, Raymond Poulidor, Cyrille Guimard, Joop Zoetemelk...

The manufacture of Mercier bicycles

The birth

It was in 1919, in the city of Saint-Étienne, that Émile Mercier and his brothers founded the bicycle factory.

Competition

Mercier among the pros

In 1933, the company's leaders took a visionary approach. To raise public awareness, Mercier assembled a professional team in 1933.

The purple

Sign of distinction

The distinctive purple jersey worn by Mercier riders first appeared in 1955. “It's not pretty, but at least we can be seen in the peloton,” said Emile Mercier.

Paris-Roubaix

The paradise for Bobet

The Breton succeeded his compatriot Jean Forestier and won the “Hell of the North” in the spring of 1956. He used his speed to beat Belgian Alfred De Bruyne and Jean Forestier in the sprint finish. Bobet became a legend with this victory in Roubaix.

Milan-San Remo

Birth of a legend

In the 1961 edition of the 298-kilometer classic race, an unknown rider appeared on screen for the first time. His name? Raymond Poulidor.

Anquetil-Poulidor

Rivalry at the top

In 1964, the rivalry between the cold Anquetil and the unlucky Poulidor divided France. The 20th stage of the 1964 Tour de France would be the deciding factor.

Record production

The peak

150,000 bicycles manufactured in 1975. Mercier's reputation was based on high-quality production, with most of its bicycles equipped with parts made in Saint-Étienne or Italy.

Towards new horizons

The celebration

Mercier now offers a complete range of products for both men and women, whatever the season.

Mercier is also the proud partner of the legendary Magève Mont-Blanc race.

Cyclist n°57 - Nov/Dec 2025

The Roubaix thermal jersey combines everything we love about Mercier: the fabric is both flexible and highly effective against inclement weather, and very comfortable to wear.

Rouleur.cc

Cyclist n° 57 - Nov/Dec 25

The Joop long cycling shorts feature a durable yet flexible outer layer with flat seams that allow for maximum freedom of movement.

The Mercier Why

Cyclist N°57 - Oct/Nov 2025

“Cyclist was interested from the outset in reviving this great name in French cycling, and we were won over by the seriousness of the venture, with its high-quality products, elegant designs, and excellent durability.”
