Joop Zoetemelk, a model of longevity and fighting spirit
Joop Zoetemelk is a cycling legend, renowned for his exceptional longevity and endurance on the road. Born in 1946 in the Netherlands, he made history in professional cycling with remarkable performances, especially in stage races. Zoetemelk holds the record for the most participations and finishes in the Tour de France, having completed 16 editions—a testament to his remarkable consistency and tenacity.
Zoetemelk joined the Mercier team in 1974, marking the beginning of a successful phase for this strong and versatile rider. He stayed with Mercier until 1980, later moving to TI-Raleigh before returning to Mercier in 1982 for the conclusion of his career under the Coop-Mercier banner. During his years with Mercier, Zoetemelk established himself as a formidable challenger in major stage races.
Ever combative, he won the professional world championship in 1985 at the age of 38, proof of his incredible sporting longevity. His career is marked by incredible consistency in both Grand Tours and the classics, earning him iconic status for Mercier.
In tribute to this great rider, Mercier has named its winter tights “Joop”, a technical garment designed to tackle winter challenges with comfort and performance. These tights pay homage to Zoetemelk’s tenacity, endurance, and elegance—values he embodied throughout his Mercier years.
